ERUDITE COMMUNITY SCHOOL TO OPEN FEB. 22 IN SAN FRANCISCO

European Style Technology Training Center Welcomes All Adult Learners Including New Immigrants

San Francisco, Calif. (February 5, 2002)–Erudite Community School of San Francisco, offering a unique European-style technology education for adults seeking career enhancement, will have its Grand Opening and Open House on Feb. 22 and 23 at its facility at 939 Market Street.

The open house tours of Erudite will be conducted on Friday, Feb. 22 from 6:30-8:30 PM and Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10 AM-3 PM. Students can call (415) 243-4311 for more information, email a request to education@erudites.net, or refer to the Erudite web site at www.erudites.net.

Erudite for the first time brings a highly interactive and exacting blend of European and American styles of technology and science education to the U.S. continuing education technical student.

Erudite President Inessa Kazaryan, a college mathematics and language instructor who emigrated from Ukraine in 1989, founded Erudite to provide rigorous, one-on-one training in science and technology to adult learners.

Erudite is an apt name for the school. In Russian, "erudite," pronounced eh-ru-DEET, is a noun that refers to a well-rounded person who has both hands-on smarts, as well as theoretical knowledge.

Erudite offers classes in computer programming, database consulting, web design, and computer-aided drafting to working adults who want to improve their skills for advancement in the marketplace. Erudite also offers English as a second language. All of the courses integrate training on computers into the instructional process.

Other courses include Oracle Database programming and Microsoft Certified Systems engineering. Computer graphics and web design is offered, along with computer-aided drafting and design, Java programming, and many other technical skills critical for business today.

"We provide what people want and need in the market," said President Inessa Kazaryan. "Our goal is to reach adult students, especially those who recently lost jobs, as well as people from diverse ethnic communities, including Asians, Hispanics, Russians and all others. We want to teach them the skills needed for entry-level technical positions."

Kazaryan holds two Master’s degrees, including in Mathematics Education from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and in Russian Philology from the State University of Taras Shevchenko, Kiev, Ukraine. She is also a PhD candidate in Computer Technology in Education and holds a BA from Florida Atlantic University.

She currently teaches Statistics and Algebra at Skyline College, a community college in San Bruno, California, and teaches math, calculus and linear algebra over the Internet to students at Limestone College in South Carolina.

Erudite Community School offers a Certificate of Completion for all course work. Erudite is approved by the California State Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.

European-American Technology Training Model

The Erudite technological training method, a combination of European and American pedagogical styles, is based on training the whole person in a close, student-based relationship. Central to the model is hands-on computer learning in a one-computer-to-each-student ratio.

Erudite’s instruction model delivers methods and results that California students are not used to: more personal attention from instructors and more demanding hands-on class and lab work. Outcomes of the European-style model are rewarding, and include a higher skill level and better retention of knowledge. For each course students deliver a final project that encapsulates all the major points of the syllabus.

Course Offerings

While Erudite Community School focuses on training in computer applications and programming, it also offers courses in medical office assistance, accounting and basic office skills, and English as a second language. Computers and one-on-one instruction are integrated into these and all other courses.

The course offerings are:

The Lab and Technical Facilities

There are 30 seats in the computer lab. Most of the PCs are Dells, and Apple Macintoshes are reserved for those learning computer graphics and web design. All computers are linked to an internal network and server, which connects students to the Internet through a firewall. The classrooms are also provided with a digital projector and screen, so students can easily follow an instructor who is demonstrating a procedure. The staff is also connected to the LAN from their home offices through a security wall.

Key Instructors

Key Erudite instructors include Igor Vinogradsky, James Sinclair and Vadim Teteriatnikov. Vinogradsky is a professional database management consultant who teaches Oracle database programming. "We prepare students not just to do well in an interview–but to succeed in the marketplace," said Vinogradsky. "We try our best to give students whatever is necessary to hit the ground running in the workplace."

Vinogradsky teaches all three levels of Oracle database programming, beginning, intermediate and advanced. The beginning course takes students from the fundamental details up to an advanced level, which prepares them for in-depth studies.

Erudite’s Associate Director and lead advisor is James Sinclair, who directs the distance education and e-learning courses at Erudite. Sinclair is the Dean of the Continuing Education Department at Kean University, a New Jersey state university, where he also teaches technology-related courses including CADD and computer animation.

"Without technical knowledge and training in technical skills, it’s very difficult to find a good job," said Sinclair. "Adults with further technical training can become highly successful corporate programmers, database managers, or digital graphic designers.

"I’ve been an educator all my life and wanted to participate," said Sinclair, who met Inessa Kazaryan in their PhD. program. "Erudite integrated state-of-the-art computer programming and design courses into its curriculum based on my recommendation."

The computer graphics teacher is Vadim Teteriatnikov, who has a Master’s degree in Graphic Design and is an award-winning commercial artist with a web design and computer graphics business. His courses will include the Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark Xpress applications for graphics and prepress students, and Macromedia Flash for web designers.

"There are no more than six or seven students in each of my classes, so I can give personal attention to each one," said Teteriatnikov. "Each student will have a computer to work with. Macs primarily will be used, but the web designers will also use PCs for the experience of working on the different platforms.

"I enjoy teaching," said Teteriatnikov. "It’s one of the most interesting things to do, to share an experience with someone. You see something different every day!"
